Berryville is a sleepy little town in the far northern corner of Virginia. Berryville gained a short lived span of fame thanks to the Wendy’s chain. Fans of the Wendy’s Hamburger restaurant chain may remember a 2011 campaign to promote the restaurant’s new Wild Berry Tea and Berry Almond Salad that was produced in and featured Berryville.

Life in Berryville is notably laid back. Berryville is a small town with a big heart. People in the town know each other and look out for one another.

The town of Berryville was formed at the intersection of Charleston Road and the Winchester Turnpike. The land was granted to Capt. Isaac Pennington in 1734 by the British Crown. The intersection was known to be a site of conflicts between local tough youths and the location of a lively tavern. Henceforth, Berryville was given the nickname of “Battle Town.” The Battletown Inn is named for the famed town moniker.

The land on which Berryville was founded changed hands through several family members. On January 15, 1798, the town was officially established. The town supported 25 residences, an apothecary, two taverns, a school and three retail stores in 1810. In 1835, Clarke County was formed and Berryville was named the county seat. The railroad finally reached Berryville in the 1870s.

The town of Berryville is nestled in the upper Shenandoah Valley in the state of Virginia. The town is 11 miles from the state’s border with neighboring West Virginia and approximately 12 miles from the city of Winchester. Washington DC is about 69 miles from Berryville. The land mass of the town is approximately 1.8 square miles.

The Town of Berryville’s website provides information to residents, visitors and businesses about the town’s resources. The historic downtown Berryville is a draw for visitors and residents alike. Berryville Main Street offers regular community news and promotes several of the local small businesses. While in town, visit the Firehouse Gallery and Shop. The old converted firehouse is now home to several small retail shops and galleries.
