Beautiful, vibrant Easton, Maryland, population 15,945, is the county seat of Talbot County. The site of Talbot County’s first courthouse, built in 1711, the town was originally called Talbot Court House and later, Talbot Town. In 1788, the town’s name was again changed, this time to Easton. Since its founding, this small but vital city has seen steady growth and has remained a center of trade and government throughout the past three centuries.
Easton is a relatively affluent area – one that supports a wide range of cultural activities and historical offerings. Several area attractions are of special note;
The headquarters of the Historical Society of Talbot County, located in downtown Easton, feature a museum, award-winning gardens, and historic houses. The Society offers a variety of exhibits, educational programs, and special events to help residents and visitors explore the heritage of Talbot County. A 10,000-piece artifact collection, document archive, and 40,000-piece photograph collection help bring area history to life. Various shops run by the Society help visitors bring home a few small – or large – reminders of their stay.
Pickering Creek Audubon Center is another local feature. Offering hiking trails, an observation deck, picnicking, and a variety of other activities, the center brings the beauty and magic of nature to all who visit, offering an activity that’s suitable for everyone, young or old.
The local restaurant scene features a variety of dining experiences from casual to gourmet. For simpler dining, the usual pizza places, cafes, burger joints and BBQs, family restaurants, steak houses, and buffets offer visitors a food for every mood. But, for those times when you’d like to be pampered with fine food and a more elegant ambiance, you’ll find a wonderful selection of more sophisticated dining establishments offering fancier gourmet fare. If the mood strikes, you’ll also find an eclectic mix of traditional ethnic restaurants, from Asian to Italian to French and more.
The city’s climate is moderate, with an average July high of 88 degrees F and an average January low of 27 degrees. The area enjoys an average 216 sunny days per year, making much of the year a great time to visit. Winter weather in Easton is brisk but sunny, so if you’d like to take a short trip off the beaten path as a pleasant diversion during the off-season, you’ll enjoy the many cultural activities and other amenities the area has to offer while avoiding the summer crowds. But, whether you visit in winter or summer – or in spring or fall – you’ll love the vital, vibrant life of this charming community that is the heart and soul of Talbot County, Maryland!
