Q: What are the three biggest mistakes people make with their central air conditioner?

A: In my experience, here are the big ones:

  1. Lack of maintenance. Remember to check the air filters every month and change if necessary. I also recommend enrolling in an annual service plan to keep your system properly maintained. Regular maintenance ensures that your equipment warranty remains valid.
  2. Installing an oversized system. Bigger is not better! When considering the replacement of your heating or cooling system, be sure to have the new system sized correctly as part of an estimate and needs analysis. A properly-sized heating and cooling system will guarantee a more comfortable home environment and save energy dollars.
  3. Choosing the wrong contractor. Do business with companies that have A+ ratings with the BBB (as we do). You should also be wary of companies that offer discounts that are too good to be true. Always get everything in writing!
