With spring on the horizon, many homeowners in Columbia, Maryland, may be considering conducting a bit of spring cleaning. One of the first things often in need of cleaning after winter is the HVAC duct system that distributes air throughout your home. Knowing when it’s time to have your ducts cleaned will save you money in the long run, despite the cost of the maintenance.

Efficiency Issues

As an HVAC duct system circulates air, it also circulates dust, dirt, and other allergens. Over time, these substances will collect in the duct system. If this buildup becomes significant enough, it will interfere with the efficiency of the system, forcing it to work harder to produce the comfort you need. If you’ve noticed a drop in the efficiency of your HVAC system (which may also be connected to a rise in utility costs), then it may be time for a duct cleaning.

Decrease in Air Quality

As mentioned above, your duct system can’t help but circulate many of the dust and other allergens you’d rather not breathe in, thus decreasing air quality. Dirty ducts also make it even easier for those allergens to make it throughout the home. If you’ve been noticing that your nose, throat, or eyes itch more than often — or if everyone else keeps getting sick for seemingly no reason — it may be time to see if your air ducts are in need of a cleaning.

Insects and Rodents

While it may seem too sickening to consider, if you’re finding insects or rodent droppings in your HVAC unit, you have a problem that requires immediate attention. This cleanliness issue may also be adversely affecting your indoor air quality as well. Griffith Energy not only will get the ducts cleaned, but we’ll work with local pest control to make sure the job is done right.
